MOUNTAIN GOLF

STORIES FROM THE APPLEWOOD MANOR

MOUNTAIN GOLF, The Applewood Manor There are more than 40 championship golf courses in Western North Carolina. Most are less than an hour’s drive from Applewood Manor. In the late 19th century, visitors began escaping the heat of Southern summers by retreating to the mountains and they brought their golf clubs with them. While summer is still the best season for golf, golf enthusiasts made the happy discovery that mountain golf is a four season activity.

In addition to spectacular scenery, mountain golf courses provide a unique playing experience with tight, narrow fairways that follow the undulating curves of our Blue Ridge Mountains. Some of our courses open to the public include the following:

The Omni Grove Park Inn Golf is a 6720 yard par 70 course. Golfweek magazine listed the Grove Park Inn course in America’s Best list (290 Macon Ave., Asheville, NC 28804-3711, (800) 438-5800).

Asheville Golf Course is a 6440 yard par 72 course. Five minutes from downtown, this public course is one of the oldest in Western North Carolina and is on the National Register of Historic Places. The course was designed by famed course architect Donald Ross in 1927 (226 Fairway Dr., Asheville, NC, 28805-2409, (828) 298-1867).

Black Mountain Golf Course is a 6215 yard par 71 course. Just seventeen miles east of Asheville, the course is home of the famous 747 yard, par 6, 17th hole—at one time the longest hole in the world (17 Ross Dr. Black Mountain, NC 28711-2862, (828) 669-2710).

Broadmoor Golf Links is a 6921 yard par 72 course. Broadmoor is nineteen miles to the south, just past the Asheville Regional Airport (101 French Broad Ln., Fletcher, NC 28732-8648, (866) 578-5847).

Reems Creek Golf Club is a 6492 yard par 72 par course. Located 8 miles from the center of Asheville, the course designed by Hawtree & Sons opened in 1989 (36 Pink Fox Cove Rd., Weaverville, NC 28787-9735, (800) 406-3936).

High Vista Golf Club is a 6936 yard par 72 course. Ten miles from the center of town, the course was designed by Tom Jackson (88 Country Club Rd., Mills River, NC 28759-2603, (828) 891-1986).

Springdale At Cold Mountain is a 6812 yard par 72 course. Only 17 miles from downtown Asheville, the course was designed by Joseph Holmes (200 Golfwatch Rd., Canton, NC 28716-5659, (800) 553-3027).

Cummings Cove Golf & Country Club is a 6,400 yards par 71 course. Designed by Robert E. Cupp, ASGCA, the course is 20 miles from Asheville’s center of town (20 Cummings Cove Pkwy., Hendersonville, NC 28739-8711, (800) 958-2905).

Asheville has been called many things—weirdest, happiest, quirkiest place in America, Santa Fe of the East, New Age Capital of the World, Paris of the South, Beer City USA, Most Haunted, Sky City and others. It has many secrets, mysteries, and legends—some factual, some alleged, some exaggerated and some just plain lies.
