The Cortland Cottage – Dog Friendly Haven at Applewood Manor

The Cortland Cottage – Dog Friendly Haven at Applewood Manor

I just plain love dogs. In fact I have found that sometimes I like dogs more than their owners!  If I had my way I would make every room at Appelwood Manor dog friendly BUT that would cause my housekeeping staff to faint.  And the possible damage to furniture and rugs a bit overwhelming.

cortland cottageWe do allow dogs to stay with their families in the Cortland Cottage.  The Cortland Cottage sits about 30 feet away from the Manor house.  It is like a studio apartment (without the kitchen).  It has it’s own small refrigerator/freezer, two ceiling fans, a wet bar with a small coffee maker, a Tudor heater (gas heater made out of porcelain and granite), an air conditioner (when needed), two person air jet heart shaped tub, designer vanity, separate shower, king size bed and plenty of space with the size 18 feet by 20 feet.  Of course there is a flat screen TV/DVD player with direct satellite, an antique ice cream table and chairs , iHome/iPad clock radio, ironing board and cortland cottage gateiron, separate instant return hot water heater, one whole mirrored wall opposite the bed, separate padded chairs and sofa and a private patio.  Parking is directly in front and all guests get a key to the manor House to enjoy the common area and breakfast is served to them with the other Manor guests.

The location 30 feet from the manor house removes the worry that a four legged guest who might get upset with their family leaving them in the cottage, can express themselves freely with barking or even whining and not disturb other guests in the Manor house. Our huge yard of slightly over an acre also affords them freedom to roam, sniff, play catch and they do not have to be on a leash as long as they do not run after the abundant tempting squirrels.  Our location just under a mile from downtown Asheville provides walking pleasure and the joining of their family to sight see.   The neighborhood is family and dog friendly as is downtown.

We have had very little damage from our little or big family members, we have lost or replaced a few blinds from eager greetings.  But the Cortland Cottage is also prepared for guests without a third or fourth wagging tailed member.  In that case after a dog visit the walls, ceiling, fan blades and all linens are replaced to remove any dander or dog hair.  Therefore there is a daily charge for the dog stay in regard to that extensive clean up required.  Dog guests do not have to be caged unless that is their norm and are allowed to sleep with their parents in the king bed!   The four legged guest are not allowed into the Manor house, especially since Lila and Maggie claim that as their private territory.  We have yet to get a single complaint so we think we have provided a happy place for those special guests to enjoy.  Lastly our housekeeping staff LOVES dogs too, and always spend too much time arguing over just who gets to make the bed, freshen the bathroom and just how many treats they will need to have handy when there is a dog in the cottage!
