The arrival of summer beckons both locals and visitors to gather in downtown Asheville’s Pack Square Park to enjoy an old-fashioned, Appalachian “Shindig on the Green“. Bring your own lawn chair or blanket, and dance under the stars to the best blue grass that the region has to offer. The party will start around sundown, at 7:00pm and it is free!
The evening will include traditional music and dance, some planned performances and some informal jams. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instruments and join in the festivities. It usually ends around 10pm.
This season’s Shindig series start on Saturday, June 28 and continues for most Saturdays in the summer (July 5, 12, 19; August 9, 16, 23, & 30). The only time it does not occur is if it is pouring down rain. Check the “Shindig on the Green” homepage or www.folkheritage.org for scheduling.
Best of all, it’s a short and beautiful walk through the historic district of Montford, to get from Applewood Manor to the Shindig (about a mile takes about 25 to 30 minutes). Perhaps, stop downtown for dinner along the way! You can always ask Larry or me for restaurant ideas and reservations, if possible. In fact they are now selling food at Pack Square Park.
